Thirty-Two

It wasn’t even noon yet, and there was a decapitated head. Zach hadn’t blinked twice at seeing it and his lack of response stood in stark contrast to the abject horror on Brandon’s face. And that was even before Lily had pushed the head under his nose. When she’d done that, Zach had fought not to laugh then and there.

Call it my evil streak.

But what did that really say about him?

He remembered what it was like to be newer to the job, how every disgusting sight would buckle his knees. All that had been a long, long time ago. The job had come to desensitize him—good or bad—just as it would make Brandon callous.

Marsh led Zach and Paige down yet another hallway. “We put Donna Olson in an associate’s office, who’s off sick today. Hopefully, she’s doing a little better.” She stopped outside an office door. The sound of sobbing leached into the hall. “Guess not.” Marsh took off in the direction they had come from.

Zach entered the office first, Paige following.

Donna, a fiftysomething woman, was sitting at the desk blowing her nose. A uniformed officer was standing next to her. He bobbed his head at Zach and Paige and left the room.

“Mrs. Olson?” Zach broached, moving toward her.

She looked up at him and Paige. Her eyes were bloodshot, and she balled the used tissue in her hand, then gripped the fabric of her shirt over her heart.

While Zach empathized with Donna, he and Paige still had a job to do, and the killer needed to be stopped before there was another victim. Donna just might play a key role in making that happen. But for any chance at that, they might have to push her a bit to draw out relevant information.

Zach glanced around the office, seeking a place for him and Paige to sit, but there were no options. Donna was in the only seat. He hated that it would leave him and Paige standing. Donna was fragile enough without feeling like they were towering over her, possibly intimidating her.

“We’re with the FBI. I’m Paige, and this is Zach,” Paige said gently.

Donna just stared at them.

“We have a few questions.” Zach crouched down next to Donna. Her hand was trembling on the arm of the chair. “Are you okay to talk for a bit?”

She nodded, fresh tears in her eyes. “I thought I was doing him a favor.”

“Who’s that, Mrs. Olson?” Zach asked.

“Mr. Henderson. But I broke procedure.”

Paige stepped forward slowly. “What do you mean?”

“I should have sent the delivery guy to Mr. Henderson’s assistant, but she’s not scheduled to come in until this afternoon. She had a doctor’s appointment,” Donna explained. “I actually thought that I was doing both of them a favor by signing for the package. Mr. Henderson didn’t see it that way.” She paused, her eyes glazing over. “He called me into his office when he saw what it was…” She paused, her chin trembling. “He made me look—” she gulped back disgust “—and threatened my job.
